Hike Volcan Santiaguiato’s Cone in Guatemala

by j.batres

It will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience of watching one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Hiking from Santa Maria de Jesus town will take up to 31/2 hours. During the hike you will watch wild flowers, the lowlands and the Pacific Ocean area and vegetation that has not changed for centuries.

With its elevation of 3,771.9 meters (12,375 ft), this volcano is located in the south foot of Volcan Santa Maria, surrounded by a mountainous zone, near the city of Quetzaltenango.

Currently, it has a complex of four rocky lava domes, one of which is called Fuego (fire) which is the active dome. It typically creates a big explosion followed up by a huge cloud of smoke every 60 minutes. The cloud can reach up to 8 km into the sky.
We will leave our building at 3:30 Am in the morning. Take a bus to Santa de Maria de Jesus town in Zunil.

Donation: $70.00 for one/two people, $60.00 for three, $80.00 for four/five people. The trip includes a hiking guide, public transportation from the city to Llanos del Pinal, purified water in our building (please bring your water bottle), entrance fee to access the park.

It does not include tips. Departures everyday. All the profits will be donated to La Pedrera Community Project, a non-profit organization supporting more than 60 children with after school academic support & computer classes, more info, www.lapedreraschoolproject.com
